About the City of Lafayette, California
Lafayette is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero of the American Revolution who served in George Washington’s army. The city is not isolated since it is surrounded by Oakland’s metro area.
The Bay Miwok tribe, which inhabited the region prior to Spanish colonization, was led by Chief Saclan. Ohlone people were also present in various locations along Lafayette Creek. The indigenous people’s initial encounters with Europeans occurred in the late 18th century, with the establishment of Catholic missions throughout the region.
